Industry / Agribusiness /- Industry DUE DILIGENCE – RUSSIA Within the framework of an acquisition project, our client sought to verify the bona fides of a potential industrial and commercial partner based in the Oblast of Leningrad, Russia. GEOS Business Intelligence collected information on the career path of the main director (professional references, reputation, key company data and figures and an assessment of company assets). We focused particularly on current and past lawsuits and the company’s business environment. The intelligence we delivered showed that the main director had a dubious reputation: connections with an ongoing corruption case, accusations of embezzlement, a variety of lawsuits involving the company, and an ongoing investigation into the company’s tangible assets. Given the facts and analyses provided by GBI, our client decided to put an end to the acquisition project. The acquisition was clearly more a threat than an opportunity.

Consumer goods / Luxury / Retailing - Cigarette manufacturer ANTI-COUNTERFEITING & SUPPLY CHAIN SECURITY - FRANCE - APRIL 2008 Within the framework of a joint operation between Customs Officials and major national manufacturers to combat counterfeiting, a leading global cigarette manufacturer asked GEOS to conduct an investigation to identify and analyse a local trafficking network in the city of Lyon. Five weeks later, GEOS experts had exposed the network involved in the trafficking of contraband cigarettes (sites, methods, brands counterfeited) and identified over ten sellers as well as several, unexpected supply sources. The team’s conclusions were then submitted to the Customs Directorate General. The operation led to the dismantling of a trafficking network responsible for the sale of over 500 packets a day.

The Director running the subsidiary was not following directives from company headquarters. It emerged that the Director owned a share of the capital of a certain company selected by him as a supplier to the subsidiary. GEOS Business Intelligence conducted an investigation to identify those responsible for these events, and to check if their declared intentions were not hiding motives of a third party seeking to benefit from the problems. Following a thorough investigation, we identified the motives of each of the stakeholders. Though no direct relation between the three issues was uncovered, it emerged that the associations protesting against our client were being given confidential information by an employee of the laboratory.

GEOS investigated to verify whether one of the companies entertained relations with local organised crime and check if their accounts were tax compliant. The conclusions of the due diligence were negative and the company was immediately shut down.
