The risk of labour unrest has never been greater.
Good labour relations promote global competitiveness and are essential for sustainable economic
results.
The current economic climate, the global downturn and industrial unrest have a major impact on
staff, management and the business environment.
New labour legislation reinforces the role of unions. Obtaining agreement from the unions is key for a
company’s development, its organisational structure and profitability. This is why stable labour union
representation is essential (French Law dated 02 August 2008 on union representation).
A lack of coordination between public authorities and local government officials, coupled with
weakened union influence on the ground and new forms of social radicalism, complicate labour
relations and aggravate industrial conflicts. A company’s capability to take action is reduced.
Poor crisis management makes a conflict worse and media coverage can create long term damage.
Collective bargaining becomes very difficult.
